ALAS! AND DID MY SAVIOR BLEED?
At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light,
And the burden of my heart rolled away,
It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!
Thy body slain, sweet Jesus, Thine
And bathed in its own blood
While the firm mark of wrath divine,
His Soul in anguish stood.
Was it for crimes that I had done
He groaned upon the tree?
Amazing pity! grace unknown!
And love beyond degree!
Well might the sun in darkness hide
And shut his glories in,
When Christ, the mighty Maker died,
For man the creature's sin.
Thus might I hide my blushing face
While His dear cross appears,
Dissolve my heart in thankfulness,
And melt my eyes to tears.
But drops of grief can ne'er repay
The debt of love I owe:
Here, Lord, I give my self away
'Tis all that I can do. -
Always and all for Jesus
Let us go forth to our labor of love,
Always and all for Jesus;
Zealous to glean for the garners above,
Always and all for Jesus;
Strength for the work we receive from the King,
Always and all for Jesus;
Nobody fails who is trusting in Him,
Always and all for Jesus.
Refrain
Always and all for Jesus,
Sing with a glad refrain,
Always and all for Jesus,
Till our Lord comes again;
Always and all for Jesus,
Gladly we yield Thine own.
The harvest shall end,
And our Lord shall descend,
To gather His reapers home.
Great is the work, and the workers are few,
Always and all for Jesus;
Do with your might what your hands find to do,
Always and all for Jesus;
Stand not in idleness all the day long,
Always and all for Jesus;
Strive for a part in the harvesters’ song,
Always and all for Jesus.
Work till the summons of Ye blessed, come,
Always and all for Jesus;
Calls us to join in the glad harvest home,
Always and all for Jesus;
Then with the sheaves we have gathered in love,
Always and all for Jesus;
Safe we’ll be housed in the garners above,
Always and all for Jesus. -
And is this life prolonged to me?
And is this life prolonged to me?
Are days and seasons giv’n?
O let me, then, prepare to be
A fitter heir of Heav’n.
In vain these moments shall not pass,
These golden hours be gone:
Lord, I accept Thine offered grace,
I bow before Thy throne.
Now cleanse my soul from every sin
By my Redeemer’s blood;
Now let my flesh and soul begin
The honors of my God.
Let me no more my soul beguile
With sin’s deceitful toys;
Let cheerful hope, increasing still,
Approach to heav’nly joys.
My thankful lips shall loud proclaim
The wonders of Thy praise,
And spread the savor of Thy name,
Where’er I spend my days.
On earth let my example shine,
And when I leave this state,
May Heav’n receive this soul of mine
To bliss supremely great. -
And now, my soul, another year
And now, my soul, another year
Of thy short life is past;
I cannot long continue here,
And this may be my last.
Awake, my soul! with utmost care
Thy true condition learn;
What are thy hopes, how sure? how fair?
What is thy great concern?
Behold, another year begins!
Set out afresh for Heaven;
Seek pardon for thy former sins,
In Christ so freely given.
Devoutly yield thyself to God,
And on His grace depend;
With zeal pursue the heavenly road,
Nor doubt a happy end. -
Are you ready for the coming of the Lord from Heav’n?
Are you ready for the coming of the Lord from Heav’n?
Are you resting in the promise which to us is giv’n?
Does your heart leap up with rapture as you know He’s near?
Or do thoughts of His appearing fill your heart with fear?
Refrain
Are you ready (are you ready),
Are you ready (are you ready),
Are you ready for the opening skies?
Are you ready (are you ready),
Are you ready (are you ready),
Are you ready for that glad surprise?
If He came to call His people would you be dismayed?
Though your sins have been forgiven would you be afraid?
Would you be ashamed to meet Him if He came today?
From the presence of the Master would you shrink away?
To this world with all its pleasures are you rooted fast?
Would a call to leave it quickly be a wrench at last?
When He views your finished life work will you suffer loss?
Will you find that you have gathered only worthless dross?
Are you busy in His service though your heart is cold?
Are there precious earthly treasures which you fondly hold?
Would He find you doing only what He could approve?
Would He find you watching, waiting for the one you love? -
ARE YOU WASHED IN THE BLOOD?
Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing power?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
Are you fully trusting in His grace this hour?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
Refrain
Are you washed in the blood,
In the soul cleansing blood of the Lamb?
Are your garments spotless? Are they white as snow?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
Are you walking daily by the Savior's side?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
Do you rest each moment in the Crucified?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
When the Bridegroom cometh will your robes be white?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
Will your soul be ready for the mansions bright,
And be washed in the blood of the Lamb?
Lay aside the garments that are stained with sin,
And be washed in the blood of the Lamb;
There's a fountain flowing for the soul unclean,
O be washed in the blood of the Lamb! -
At the feast of Belshazzar and a thousand of his lords,
At the feast of Belshazzar and a thousand of his lords,
While they drank from golden vessels, as the Book of Truth records,
In the night, as they reveled in the royal palace hall,
They were seized with consternation—’twas the Hand upon the wall!
Refrain
’Tis the hand of God on the wall!
’Tis the hand of God on the wall!
Shall the record be Found wanting!
Or shall it be Found trusting!
While that hand is writing on the wall?
See the brave captive, Daniel, as he stood before the throng,
And rebuked the haughty monarch for his mighty deeds of wrong;
As he read out the writing—’twas the doom of one and all,
For the kingdom now was finished—said the Hand upon the wall!
See the faith, zeal and courage, that would dare to do the right,
Which the Spirit gave to Daniel—’twas the secret of his might,
In his home in Judea, or a captive in the hall,
He understood the writing of his God upon the wall!
So our deeds are recorded—there’s a Hand that’s writing now:
Sinner, give your heart to Jesus, to His royal mandates bow;
For the day is approaching—it must come to one and all,
When the sinners’ condemnation will be written on the wall! -
Awake, my soul, stretch every nerve,
Awake, my soul, stretch every nerve,
And press with vigor on;
A heavenly race demands thy zeal,
And an immortal crown,
And an immortal crown.
A cloud of witnesses around
Hold thee in full survey;
Forget the steps already trod,
And onward urge thy way,
And onward urge thy way.
’Tis God’s all animating voice
That calls thee from on high;
’Tis His own hand presents the prize
To thine aspiring eye,
To thine aspiring eye.
That prize, with peerless glories bright,
Which shall new luster boast,
When victors’ wreaths and monarchs’ gems
Shall blend in common dust,
Shall blend in common dust.
Blest Savior, introduced by Thee,
Have I my race begun;
And, crowned with vict’ry at Thy feet,
I’ll lay my honors down,
I’ll lay my honors down. -
Awake, my zeal; awake, my love
Awake, my zeal; awake, my love,
To serve my Savior here below,
In works which perfect saints above
And holy angels cannot do.
Awake, my charity, to feed
The hungry soul, and clothe the poor;
In Heav’n are found no sons of need,
There all these duties are no more.
Subdue thy passions, O my soul!
Maintain the fight, thy work pursue,
Daily thy rising sins control,
And be thy victories ever new.
The land of triumph lies on high,
There are no foes t’encounter there;
Lord, I would conquer till I die,
And finish all the glorious war.
Let every flying hour confess
I gain Thy Gospel fresh renown;
And when my life and labors cease,
May I possess the promised crown! -
Behold My Servant! see Him rise
Behold My Servant! see Him rise
Exalted in My might!
Him have I chosen, and in Him
I place supreme delight.
On Him, in rich effusion poured,
My Spirit shall descend;
My truths and judgments He shall show
To earth’s remotest end.
Gentle and still shall be His voice,
No threats from Him proceed;
The smoking flax He shall not quench,
Nor break the bruised reed.
The feeble spark to flames He’ll raise;
The weak will not despise;
Judgment He shall bring forth to truth,
And make the fallen rise.
The progress of His zeal and power
Shall never know decline,
Till foreign lands and distant isles
Receive the law divine.
He who erected Heav’n’s bright arch,
And bade the planets roll,
Who peopled all the climes of earth,
And formed the human soul,
Thus saith the Lord, Thee have I raised,
My Prophet Thee install;
In right I’ve raised Thee, and in strength
I’ll succor whom I call.
I will establish with the lands
A covenant in Thee,
To give the Gentile nations light,
And set the prisoners free:
Asunder burst the gates of brass;
The iron fetters fall;
And gladsome light and liberty
Are straight restored to all.
I am the Lord, and by the name
Of great Jehovah known;
No idol shall usurp My praise,
Nor mount into My throne.
Lo! former scenes, predicted once
Conspicuous rise to view;
And future scenes, predicted now,
Shall be accomplished too.
Sing to the Lord in joyful strains!
Let earth His praise resound,
Ye who upon the ocean dwell,
And fill the isles around!
O city of the Lord! begin
The universal song;
And let the scattered villages
The cheerful notes prolong.
Let Kedar’s wilderness afar
Lift up its lonely voice;
And let the tenants of the rock
With accents rude rejoice;
Till ‘midst the streams of distant lands
The islands sound His praise;
And all combined, with one accord,
Jehovah’s glories raise. -
Be Still My Soul
Be Still
Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side.
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change, He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake
To guide the future, as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul: the waves and winds still know
His voice Who ruled them while He dwelt below.
Be still, my soul: when dearest friends depart,
And all is darkened in the vale of tears,
Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart,
Who comes to soothe thy sorrow and thy fears.
Be still, my soul: thy Jesus can repay
From His own fullness all He takes away.
Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord.
When disappointment, grief and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love's purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul: when change and tears are past
All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.
Be still, my soul: begin the song of praise
On earth, be leaving, to Thy Lord on high;
Acknowledge Him in all thy words and ways,
So shall He view thee with a well pleased eye.
Be still, my soul: the Sun of life divine
Through passing clouds shall but more brightly shine. -

BE THOU MY VISION
Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.
Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.
Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;
Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
Thou my soul's Shelter, Thou my high Tower:
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.
Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of heaven, my Treasure Thou art.
High King of heaven, my victory won,
May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all. -
Blessed Bible, Book of Gold,
Blessed Bible, Book of Gold,
Precious truths thy pages hold,
Truths to lead me day by day
All along my pilgrim way.
Refrain
Blessed Bible, pure and true,
Guide me all my journey through;
Heav’nly light within me shine,
Help me make thy precepts mine!
Lamp of faith, my feet to lead,
Bread of Heav’n, my soul to feed;
Living waters pure and free,
Book of books thou art to me.
Word of God, thy love impart,
Fire my zeal, and cleanse my heart;
Keep me earnest, keep me true,
Ev’ry day my strength renew. -
Blest are the sons of peace,
Blest are the sons of peace,
Whose hearts and hopes are one,
Whose kind designs to serve and please
Through all their actions run.
Blest is the pious house
Where zeal and friendship meet;
Their songs of praise, their mingled vows,
Make their communion sweet.
Thus when on Aaron’s head
They poured the rich perfume,
The oil through all his raiment spread,
And pleasure filled the room.
Thus on the heav’nly hills
The saints are blest above,
Where joy, like morning dew, distills,
And all the air is love. -
Blest is the man who shuns the place
Blest is the man who shuns the place
Where sinners love to meet;
Who fears to tread their wicked ways,
And hates the scoffer’s seat.
But in the statutes of the Lord
Has placed his chief delight;
By day he reads or hears the Word,
And meditates by night.
He, like a plant of generous kind,
By living waters set,
Safe from the storms and blasting wind,
Enjoys a peaceful state.
Green as the leaf, and ever fair,
Shall his profession shine;
While fruits of holiness appear
Like clusters on the vine.
Not so the impious and unjust;
What vain designs they form!
Their hopes are blown away like dust,
Or chaff before the storm.
Sinners in judgment shall not stand
Amongst the sons of grace,
When Christ, the Judge, at His right hand
Appoints His saints a place.
His eye beholds the path they tread,
His heart approves it well;
But crooked ways of sinners lead
Down to the gates of hell. -
Bounteous Spirit, ever shedding
Bounteous Spirit, ever shedding
Life the world to fill!
Swarms the fruitful globe o’erspreading,
Shoals their ocean pathway threading,
Own Thy quickening thrill:
Author of each creature’s birth,
Life of life beneath the earth,
Everywhere, O Spirit blest,
Thou art motion, Thou art rest.
Come, Creator! grace bestowing—
All Thy sevenfold dower!
Come, Thy peace and bounty strowing,
Earth’s renewer! Thine the sowing
Thine the gladdening shower.
Comforter! what joy Thou art
To the blest and faithful heart;
But to man’s primeval foe
Uttermost despair and woe.
O’er the waters of creation
Moved Thy wings divine;
When the world, to animation
Waking ’neath Thy visitation,
Teemed with powers benign:
Thou didst man to being call
Didst restore him from his fall;
Pouring, like the latter rain,
Grace to quicken him again.
Thine the Gospel voices, crying
As with trumpet sound;
Till the world, in darkness lying,
Rose from deathly sleep, descrying
Heavenly light around.
Man, to reach that prize revealed,
Armed with Thee as with a shield,
Nerved and girt his fight to win,
Quells the prince of death and sin.
Lowliest homage now before Thee
Let the ransomed pay;
For Thy wondrous gifts adore Thee,
By Thy holiness implore Thee,
While in love they pray:
Holy! Holy! we repeat,
Kneeling at Thy mercy seat;
There unbosom every woe,
Groanings Thou alone canst know.
Fount of grace for every nation,
Refuge of the soul!
Strengthen Thou each new creation,
With the waters of salvation
Make the guilty whole:
Rule on earth the powers that be;
Give us priests inspired of Thee;
Through Thy holy Church increase
Purest unity and peace.
Purge and sanctify us wholly
From the leaven of ill;
Save from Satan’s grasp unholy;
To a living faith and lowly
Mould the upright will;
Till the olden zeal return,
And with mutual love we burn;
Till in peace, no more to roam,
All the flock be gathered home. -
Christ for the world we sing,
Christ for the world we sing,
The world to Christ we bring, with loving zeal,
The poor and them that mourn, the faint and overborne,
Sin sick and sorrow worn, whom Christ doth heal.
Christ for the world we sing,
The world to Christ we bring, with fervent prayer;
The wayward and the lost, by restless passions tossed,
Redeemed at countless cost, from dark despair.
Christ for the world we sing,
The world to Christ we bring, with one accord;
With us the work to share, with us reproach to dare,
With us the cross to bear, for Christ our Lord.
Christ for the world we sing,
The world to Christ we bring, with joyful song;
The newborn souls, whose days, reclaimed from error’s ways,
Inspired with hope and praise, to Christ belong. -
Christian, rise and act thy creed;
Christian, rise and act thy creed;
Let thy prayer be in thy deed;
Seek the right, perform the true,
Raise thy works and life anew.
Hearts around thee sink with care;
Thou canst help their load to bear;
Thou canst bring inspiring light,
Arm their faltering wills to fight.
Let thine aims be hope and joy,
And thy worship God’s employ;
Give Him thanks in humble zeal,
Learning all His will to feel.
Come, then law divine, and reign;
Freest faith assailed in vain,
Perfect love bereft of fear,
Born in heaven and radiant here. -
Christ, in highest Heav’n enthroned,
Christ, in highest Heav’n enthronèd,
Equal of the Father’s might,
By pure spirits, trembling, ownèd,
God of God, and Light of Light,
Thee ’mid angel hosts we sing,
Thee their maker and their king.
All who circling round adore Thee,
All who bow before Thy throne,
Burn with flaming zeal before Thee,
Thy behests to carry down;
To and fro, ’twixt earth and Heav’n,
Speed they each on errands given.
First of all those legions glorious,
Michael waves his sword of flame,
Who of old in war victorious
Did the dragon’s fierceness tame;
Who with might invincible
Thrust the rebel down to hell.
Strong to aid the sick and dying,
Called from Heav’n they swiftly fly,
Grace divine and strength supplying
In their mortal agony:
Souls released from bondage here
Safe to paradise they bear.
To the Father praise be given
By the unfallen angel host,
Who in His great war have striven
With the legions of the lost;
Equal praise in highest Heav’n
To the Son and Holy Ghost. -
Christ, of all my hopes the ground;
Christ, of all my hopes the ground;
Christ, the spring of all my joy;
Still in Thee may I be found,
Still for Thee my powers employ,
Still for Thee my powers employ.
Let Thy love my heart inflame;
Keep Thy fear before my sight;
Be Thy praise my highest aim;
Be Thy smile my chief delight,
Be Thy smile my chief delight.
When affliction clouds my sky,
And the wintry tempests blow,
Let Thy mercy beaming eye
Sweetly cheer the night of woe.
Sweetly cheer the night of woe.
When new triumphs of Thy name
Swell the raptured songs above,
May I feel a kindred flame,
Full of zeal, and full of love!
Full of zeal, and full of love!
Life’s best joy, to see Thy praise
Fly on wings of Gospel light,
Leading on millennial days,
Scattering all the shades of night!
Scattering all the shades of night!
Fountain of overflowing grace,
Freely from Thy fullness give;
Till I close my earthly race,
May I prove it Christ to live!
May I prove it Christ to live!
When, with wasting sickness worn,
Sinking to the grave I lie,
Or, by sudden anguish torn,
Startled nature dreads to die,
Startled nature dreads to die.
Jesus, my redeeming Lord,
Be Thou then in mercy near!
Let Thy smile of love afford
Full relief from all my fear,
Full relief from all my fear.
Firmly trusting in Thy blood,
Nothing shall my heart confound;
Safely I shall pass the flood,
Safely reach Emmanuel’s ground,
Safely reach Emmanuel’s ground.
When I touch the blessed shore,
Back the closing waves shall roll;
Death’s dark stream shall never more
Part from Thee my ravished soul,
Part from Thee my ravished soul.
Thus, O thus, an entrance give
To the land of cloudless sky;
Having known it Christ to live,
Let me know it gain to die,
Let me know it gain to die. -
Come, all ye sons of God, who have received the priesthood,
Come, all ye sons of God, who have received the priesthood,
Go spread the Gospel wide, and gather in His people,
The latter day work has begun, to gather scattered Israel in
And bring them back to Zion to praise the Lamb.
Come, all ye scattered sheep, and listen to your Shepherd,
While you the blessing reap, which long have been predicted;
By prophets long it’s been foretold He’ll gather you into His fold
And bring you home to Zion to praise the Lamb.
Repent and be baptized, and have your sins remitted,
And get the Spirit’s zeal; O then you’ll be united;
Go cast upon Him all your cares; He will regard your humble prayer
And bring you home to Zion to praise the Lamb.
And when your grief is o’er and ended your affliction,
Your spirits then will soar to await the resurrection;
And then His presence you’ll enjoy, in heavenly bliss your time employ,
A thousand years in Zion to praise the Lamb. -
Come hither, all ye weary souls,
“Come hither, all ye weary souls,
Ye heavy-laden sinners, come;
I’ll give you rest from all your toils,
And raise you to My heav’nly home.
“They shall find rest that learn of Me;
I’m of a meek and lowly mind;
But passion rages like the sea,
And pride is restless as the wind.
Blest is the man whose shoulders take
My yoke, and bear it with delight;
My yoke is easy to his neck,
My grace shall make the burden light.
Jesus, we come at Thy command;
With faith, and hope, and humble zeal,
Resign our spirits to Thy hand,
To mold and guide us at Thy will. -
Come, Holy Ghost, eternal God,
Come, Holy Ghost, eternal God,
Proceeding from above,
Both from the Father and the Son,
The God of peace and love;
Visit our minds, into our hearts
Thy heav’nly grace inspire;
That truth and godliness we may
Pursue with full desire.
Thou in Thy gifts art manifold;
By them Christ’s Church doth stand;
In faithful hearts Thou writ’st Thy law,
The finger of God’s hand.
According to Thy promise, Lord,
Thou givest speech with grace,
That through Thy help God’s praises may
Resound in every place.
O Holy Ghost, into our minds
Send down Thy heav’nly light;
Kindle our hearts with fervent zeal
To serve God day and night.
Our weakness strengthen and confirm,
For, Lord, Thou know’st us frail;
That neither devil, world, nor flesh,
Against us may prevail.
Put back our enemy from us,
And help us to obtain
Peace in our hearts with God and man—
The best, the truest gain;
Of strife and of dissension
Dissolve, O Lord, the bands,
And knit the knots of peace and love
Throughout all Christian lands.
Grant us the grace that we may know
The Father of all might,
That we of His belovèd Son
May gain the blissful sight;
And that we may with perfect faith
Ever acknowledge Thee,
The Spirit of Father, and of Son,
One God in Persons Three.
To God the Father laud and praise,
And to His blessèd Son,
And to the Holy Spirit of grace,
Co-equal Three in One. -
Come, let us all unite to sing:
Come, let us all unite to sing:
God is love!
Let Heav’n and earth their praises bring,
God is love!
Let every soul from sin awake,
Let every heart sweet music make,
And sing with us for Jesus’ sake:
God is love!
Refrain
God is love! God is love!
Come let us all unite to sing that God is love.
O tell to earth’s remotest bound,
God is love!
In Christ we have redemption found,
God is love!
His blood has washed our sins away,
His Spirit turned our night to day,
And now we can rejoice to say:
God is love!
How happy is our portion here,
God is love!
His promises our spirits cheer,
God is love!
He is our sun and shield by day,
Our help, our hope, our strength and stay;
He will be with us all the way;
God is love!
In Canaan we will sing again:
God is love!
And this shall be our loudest strain:
God is love!
Whilst endless ages roll along,
We’ll triumph with the heavenly throng
And this shall be our sweetest song:
God is love! -
Come, Lord, and let Thy power
Come, Lord, and let Thy power
On each and all descend,
While gathered in Thy holy name,
Before Thy throne we bend.
Refrain
Refresh our waiting souls,
Our feeble faith inspire,
And from Thine altar touch our hearts
With coals of sacred fire.
Come, Lord, and let Thy power
Each thought of self remove;
And may we feel as ne’er before
Thy pure and perfect love.
Our waiting, longing eyes,
Are looking up to Thee,
O may we, in Thy smiling face,
Our Father’s glory see.
Come, Lord, Thy power alone
The work of grace can do;
Now let it consecrate to Thee
Our hearts and lives anew.
Be ours, with fervent zeal,
Thy bloodstained cross to bear;
Till at Thy feet we lay it down,
A crown of life to wear. -
Come, O my soul, the call obey,
Come, O my soul, the call obey,
Take up the burden of thy Lord!
His practice is thy living way,
Thy guide His pure unerring Word;
The lovely perfect pattern read,
And haste in all His steps to tread.
What did my Lord from sinners bear?
His patience is the rule for me;
Walking in Him I cannot err:
And lo! the Man of Griefs I see
Whose life one scene of sufferings was,
Quite from the manger to the cross.
Here then my calling I discern,
’Tis written in affliction’s book,
My first, and latest lesson learn,
For nothing here but sufferings look,
I bow me to the will divine,
To suffer with my Lord be mine.
To suffer as my Lord I come:
How did the Lamb His wrongs endure?
Clamorous and warm? or meek, and dumb?
Did He by force His life secure?
His injured innocence defend;
Or bear His burden to the end?
Did He evade the pain, and shame,
Impatient of unjust disgrace?
Did He throw off the imputed blame?
Did He from spitting hide His face?
Did He to man for succor fly?
Or offer up Himself, and die?
When nature sank beneath her load,
Would He the dreadful cup decline?
Prostrate, and bruised, and sweating blood,
Father, Thy will be done, not Mine,
He speaks, and meets His enemies,
And gives them power Himself to seize.
The Word, which struck them to the ground,
Could it not strike them into hell?
Whom all the hosts of Heaven surround,
He will not force by force repel;
Put up, He cries, thy needless sword,
Nor stain the meekness of thy Lord.
He chides His rash disciple’s zeal,
Accepts nor man’s nor angel’s aid:
Vouchsafes His wounded foe to heal:
The hands that had His murderers made,
He stretches out; He lets them bind
The hands that could unmake mankind.
Doth He in deed or word gainsay,
Or ask or struggle to be freed?
The lead the speechless Lamb away:
To scorn, and pain, and death they lead
The speechless Lamb; resigned unto
The utmost earth and hell could do.
O that I might like Him withstand,
Like Him mine innocency clear,
Like Him resist the ruffian band,
Like Him refuse the cross to bear,
Like Him the persecutor fly,
Like Him submit to live, and die? -
Come, Thou Bright and Morning Star,
Come, Thou Bright and Morning Star,
Light of light without beginning;
Shine upon us from afar
That we may be kept from sinning.
Drive away by Thy clear light
Our dark night.
Let Thy grace, like morning dew,
Falling soft on barren places,
Comfort, quicken, and renew
Our dry souls and dying graces;
Bless Thy flock from Thy rich store
Evermore.
May Thy fervent love destroy
Our cold works, in us awaking
Ardent zeal and holy joy
At the purple morn’s first breaking.
Let us truly rise ere yet
Life has set.
Ah! Thou dayspring from on high,
Grant that at Thy next appearing
We who in the graves do lie
May arise, Thy summons hearing,
And rejoice in our new life,
Far from strife.
Light us to those heavenly spheres,
Sun of grace, in glory shrouded;
Lead us through this vale of tears
To the land where days unclouded,
Purest joy, and perfect peace
Never cease. -
Crown Thine ancient church's story, Prayer for the Church
God of grace and God of glory,
On Thy people pour Thy power.
Crown Thine ancient church's story,
Bring her bud to glorious flower.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
For the facing of this hour,
For the facing of this hour.
Lo! the hosts of evil 'round us,
Scorn Thy Christ, assail His ways.
From the fears that long have bound us,
Free our hearts to faith and praise.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
For the living of these days,
For the living of these days.
Cure Thy children's warring madness,
Bend our pride to Thy control.
Shame our wanton selfish gladness,
Rich in things and poor in soul.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
Lest we miss Thy kingdom's goal,
Lest we miss Thy kingdom's goal.
Set our feet on lofty places,
Gird our lives that they may be,
Armored with all Christ-like graces,
In the fight to set men free.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
That we fail not man nor Thee,
That we fail not man nor Thee.
Save us from weak resignation,
To the evils we deplore.
Let the search for Thy salvation,
Be our glory evermore.
Grant us wisdom, grant us courage,
Serving Thee Whom we adore,
Serving Thee Whom we adore. -
Deceived by subtle snares of hell,
Deceived by subtle snares of hell,
Adam, our head, our father, fell;
When Satan, in the serpent hid,
Proposed the fruit that God forbid.
Death was the threatening: death began
To take possession of the man;
His unborn race received the wound,
And heavy curses smote the ground.
But Satan found a worse reward:
Thus saith the vengeance of the Lord:
“Let everlasting hatred be
Betwixt the woman’s seed and thee.
The woman’s seed shall be my Son;
He shall destroy what thou hast done;
Shall break thy head, and only feel
Thy malice raging at His heel.
He spake; and bid four thousand years
Roll on; at length His Son appears;
Angels with joy descend to earth,
And sing the young Redeemer’s birth.
Lo, by the sons of hell He dies;
But as He hung ’twixt earth and skies,
He gave their prince a fatal blow,
And triumphed o’er the powers below. -
Depth of mercy! Can there be
Depth of mercy! Can there be
Mercy still reserved for me?
Can my God His wrath forbear,
Me, the chief of sinners, spare?
I have long withstood His grace,
Long provoked Him to His face,
Would not hearken to His calls,
Grieved Him by a thousand falls.
I my master have denied,
I afresh have crucified,
And profaned His hallowed name,
Put Him to an open shame.
I have spilt His precious blood,
Trampled on the Son of God,
Filled with pangs unspeakable,
I, who yet am not in hell!
Lo! I still walk on the ground:
Lo! an advocate is found:
Hasten not to cut him down,
Let this barren soul alone.
Jesus speaks, and pleads His blood!
He disarms the wrath of God;
Now my Father’s mercies move,
Justice lingers into love.
Kindled His relentings are,
Me He now delights to spare,
Cries, How shall I give thee up?
Lets the lifted thunder drop.
Whence to me this waste of love?
Ask my advocate above!
See the cause in Jesus’ face,
Now before the throne of grace.
There for me the Savior stands,
Shows His wounds and spreads His hands.
God is love! I know, I feel;
Jesus weeps and loves me still.
Jesus, answer from above,
Is not all Thy nature love?
Wilt Thou not the wrong forget,
Permit me to kiss Thy feet?
If I rightly read Thy heart,
If Thou all compassion art,
Bow Thine ear, in mercy bow,
Pardon and accept me now.
Pity from Thine eye let fall,
By a look my soul recall;
Now the stone to flesh convert,
Cast a look, and break my heart.
Now incline me to repent,
Let me now my sins lament,
Now my foul revolt deplore,
Weep, believe, and sin no more. -
Do I believe what Jesus saith,
Do I believe what Jesus saith,
And think His Gospel true?
Lord, make me bold to own my faith,
And practice virtue, too.
Suppress my shame, subdue my fear,
Arm me with heav’nly zeal,
That I may make Thy power appear,
And works of praise fulfill.
If men shall see my virtue shine,
And spread my name abroad,
Thine is the power, the praise is Thine,
My Savior and my God!
Thus when the saints in glory meet,
Their lips proclaim Thy grace;
They cast their honors at Thy feet,
And own their borrowed rays. -
Don’t forget to pray
When the day is dark and lonely,
Don’t forget to pray;
Prayer will make your pathway brighter,
Drive the clouds away.
For your tender heav’nly Father
Listens when you call,
And in loving wisdom answers,
Trust Him for it all.
Refrain
Breathe out all your joys and sorrows
In His listening ear;
Is your way a maze before you?
He will make it clear.
Walking thus, and talking with Him
In communion blest,
In the secret of His presence,
He will give you rest.
When the sun is brightly shining
On your pilgrim way,
Let the Savior share your gladness,
Don’t forget to pray.
For He longs to walk beside you,
Your most trusted friend,
And abide thro’ storm and sunshine
To your journey’s end.
O the bliss this wondrous friendship
Will your soul afford,
Dwelling thus in closest union
With your loving Lord;
Till in Heav’n you shall behold Him,
See Him face to face,
And throughout eternal ages
Praise Him for His grace. -
Do we live so close to the Lord today,
Do we live so close to the Lord today,
Passing to and fro on life’s busy way,
That the world in us can a likeness see
To the Man of Calvary?
Refrain
Can the world see Jesus in me?
Can the world see Jesus in you?
Does your love to Him ring true,
And your life and service, too?
Can the world see Jesus in you?
Do we love, with love to His own akin,
All His creatures lost in the mire of sin?
Will we reach a hand, whatsoe’er it cost,
To reclaim a sinner lost?
As an open book they our lives will read,
To our words and acts giving daily heed;
Will they be attracted, or turn away
From the Man of Calvary? -
Do you see the Hebrew captive kneeling,
Do you see the Hebrew captive kneeling,
At morning, noon and night, to pray?
In his chamber he remembers Zion,
Though in exile far away.
Refrain
Are your windows open toward Jerusalem,
Though as captives here, a little while we stay?
For the coming of the King in His glory
Are you watching day by day?
Do not fear to tread the fiery furnace,
Nor shrink the lion’s den to share;
For the God of Daniel will deliver,
He will send His angel there.
Children of the living God, take courage,
Your great deliverance sweetly sing.
Set your faces toward the hill of Zion,
Thence to hail your coming King. -
Eternal depth of love divine,
Eternal depth of love divine,
In Jesus, God with us, displayed;
How bright Thy beaming glories shine!
How wide Thy healing streams are spread!
With whom dost Thou delight to dwell?
Sinners, a vile and thankless race:
O God, what tongue aright can tell
How vast Thy love, how great Thy grace!
The dictates of Thy sovereign will
With joy our grateful hearts receive:
All Thy delight in us fulfill;
Lo! all we are to Thee we give.
To Thy sure love, Thy tender care,
Our flesh, soul, spirit, we resign:
O fix Thy sacred presence there,
And seal the abode for ever Thine.
O King of glory, Thy rich grace
Our feeble thought surpasses far;
Yea, even our crimes, though numberless,
Less numerous than Thy mercies are.
Still, Lord, Thy saving health display,
And arm our souls with heav’nly zeal;
So fearless shall we urge our way
Through all the powers of earth and hell. -
Eternity! Eternity!
Eternity! Eternity!
How long art thou, Eternity!
And yet to thee time hastes away,
Like as the warhorse to the fray,
Or swift as couriers homeward go,
Or ship to port, or shaft from bow.
Ponder, O Man, Eternity!
Eternity! Eternity!
How long art thou, Eternity!
For even as on a perfect sphere
End nor beginning can appear,
E’en so, Eternity, in thee
Entrance nor exit can there be.
Ponder, O Man, Eternity!
Eternity! Eternity!
How long art thou, Eternity!
A circle infinite art thou,
Thy center an Eternal Now,
Never, we name thy outer bound,
For never end therein is found.
Ponder, O Man, Eternity!
Eternity! Eternity!
How long art thou, Eternity!
A little bird with fretting beak
Might wear to naught the loftiest peak,
Though but each thousand years it came,
Yet thou wert then, as now, the same.
Ponder, O Man, Eternity!
Eternity! Eternity!
How long art thou, Eternity!
As long as God is God, so long
Endure the pains of sin and wrong,
So long the joys of Heav’n remain;
Oh lasting joy, Oh lasting pain!
Ponder, O Man, Eternity!
Eternity! Eternity!
How long art thou, Eternity!
O Man, full oft thy thoughts should dwell
Upon the pains of sin and hell,
And on the glories of the pure,
That both beyond all time endure,
Ponder, O Man, Eternity!
Eternity! Eternity!
How long art thou, Eternity!
How terrible art thou in woe,
How fair where joys for ever glow!
God’s goodness sheddeth gladness here,
His justice there wakes bitter fear.
Ponder, O Man, Eternity!
Eternity! Eternity!
How long art thou, Eternity!
They who lived poor and naked rest
With God, for ever rich and blest,
And love and praise the Highest Good,
In perfect bliss and gladsome mood.
Ponder, O Man, Eternity!
Eternity! Eternity!
How long art thou, Eternity!
A moment lasts all joy below,
Whereby man sinks to endless woe,
A moment lasts all earthly pain,
Whereby an endless joy we gain,
Ponder, O Man, Eternity!
Eternity! Eternity!
How long art thou, Eternity!
Who ponders oft on thee, is wise,
All fleshly lusts will he despise,
The world finds place with him no more;
The love of vain delights is o’er.
Ponder, O Man, Eternity!
Eternity! Eternity!
How long art thou, Eternity!
Who marks thee well would say to God,
Here judge, burn, smite me with Thy rod,
Here let me all Thy justice bear,
When time of grace is past, then spare!
Ponder, O Man, Eternity!
Eternity! Eternity!
How long art thou, Eternity!
Lo, I, Eternity, warn thee,
O Man, that oft thou think on me,
The sinner’s punishment and pain,
To them who love their God, rich gain!
Ponder, O Man, Eternity! -
Fade, fade, each earthly joy, JESUS IS MINE (Bonar)
Fade, fade, each earthly joy, Jesus is mine!
Break every tender tie, Jesus is mine!
Dark is the wilderness, Earth has no resting place,
Jesus alone can bless, Jesus is mine!
Tempt not my soul away, Jesus is mine!
Here would I ever stay, Jesus is mine!
Perishing things of clay, born but for one brief day,
Pass from my heart away, Jesus is mine!
Farewell, ye dreams of night, Jesus is mine!
Lost in this dawning bright, Jesus is mine!
All that my soul has tried left but a dismal void;
Jesus has satisfied, Jesus is mine!
Farewell, mortality, Jesus is mine!
Welcome, eternity, Jesus is mine!
Welcome, oh, loved and blest, welcome sweet scenes of rest,
Welcome, my Savior’s breast, Jesus is mine! -
Father, I sing Thy wondrous grace,
Father, I sing Thy wondrous grace,
I bless my Savior’s name;
He bought salvation for the poor,
And bore the sinner’s shame.
His deep distress has raised us high;
His duty and His zeal
Fulfilled the law which mortals broke,
And finished all Thy will.
His dying groans, His living songs,
Shall better please my God
Than harp or trumpet’s solemn sound,
Than goat’s or bullock’s blood.
This shall His humble followers see,
And set their hearts at rest;
They by His death draw near to Thee,
And live forever blessed.
Let Heav’n and all that dwell on high
To God their voices raise,
While lands and seas assist the sky,
And join t’advance the praise.
Sion is thine, most holy God,
Thy Son shall bless her gates;
And glory purchased by His blood
For Thy own Israel waits. -
For Sion’s sake I will not cease
For Sion’s sake I will not cease
In agony of prayer to cry,
No, never will I hold my peace,
Till God proclaim salvation nigh:
Worthy in her great Savior’s worth
’Till Sion doth illustrious shine,
And as a burning lamp goes forth
The blaze of righteousness divine.
Thy righteousness the world shall see,
The Gentiles on thy beauty gaze,
And all the kings of earth agree
In wondering at thy glorious grace.
Thy glorious grace what tongue can tell?
The Lord shall a new name impart,
Th’unutterable name reveal,
And write it on His people’s heart.
Sion, for thee Thy God shall care,
And claim thee as His just reward,
Thee for His crown of glory wear,
The royal diadem of thy Lord.
Outcast of God and man no more,
No more forsaken and forlorn,
Thy desolate estate is o’er,
For God shall comfort all that mourn.
The widowed Church shall married be,
And soon a numerous offspring bear:
Thy every son shall comfort thee,
And cherish with a husband’s care.
Thy duteous sons to thee shall cleave,
The barren woman that keeps house,
Nor ever more the bosom leave
Of their dear mother and their spouse.
The Lord Himself thy husband is,
He bought, and claims thee for His own;
Thy God delights to call thee His,
Flesh of His flesh, bone of His bone.
The joy that swells a bridegroom’s breast,
When glorying o’er his long-sought bride,
Shall swell Thy God, of thee possessed,
Of thee, for whom He lived and died.
Prophets to thee thy Lord hath raised,
O holy city of our God,
Hath on thy walls His watchmen placed,
And with a trumpet-voice endued.
They cry, and never hold their peace,
His promise day and night they plead,
Till God from all thy sins release,
And make thee like thy glorious Head.
Call on Him now, ye watchmen, call,
Cry, ye remembrancers divine,
Give Him no rest, who died for all,
Till in all His pure worship join:
Till God appear, the faithful God,
And make Jerusalem a praise,
And spread thro’ all the earth abroad,
And ’stablish her with perfect grace.
The Lord by His right hand hath sworn,
The arm of His almighty power,
No more shalt thou to sin return,
Thy en’my shall no more devour.
Satan, the world, and sin too long
Have robbed the children of their bread,
Poor laboring souls, they suffered wrong,
Nor saw their legal toil succeed.
They sowed the ground, and did not reap,
Planted, and not drink the wine:
But I will comfort all that weep,
And fill the poor with food divine.
No more shall strange desires consume
Their holy, pure, and constant joy,
The waster pride no more shall come,
Their gifts and graces to destroy.
Surely the faithful see at last
The labor of their hands shall eat,
Shall praise the Lord, and more than taste
The heavenly everlasting meat.
They all shall sit beneath the vine,
In calm inviolable peace,
And drink within My courts the wine,
My courts of perfect holiness.
Go thro’ the gates (’tis God commands);
Workers with God, the charge obey,
Remove whate’er His work withstands,
Prepare, prepare His people’s way.
Their even course let nothing stop,
Cast up the way, the stones remove,
The high and holy way cast up,
The Gospel way of perfect love.
Lift up for all mankind to see
The standard of their dying God,
And point them to the shameful tree,
The cross all stained with hallowed blood.
The Lord hath glorified His grace,
Throughout the earth proclaimed His Son;
Say ye to all the sinful race,
He died for all your sins t’atone.
Sion, thy suffering God behold,
Thy Savior and salvation, too:
He comes, He comes, so long foretold,
Clothed in a vest of bloody hue.
Himself prepares His people’s hearts,
Breaks and binds up, and wounds and heals,
A mystic death, and life imparts,
Empties the full, the emptied fills.
He fills whom first He hath prepared,
With Him the perfect grace is given,
Himself is here their great reward,
Their future and their present Heaven.
They now the holy people named,
Their glorious title shall express,
From all iniquity redeemed,
Filled with the Lord their righteousness.
A chosen, saved, peculiar race,
Sion, with all thy sons thou art,
Elect thro’ sanctifying grace,
Perfect in love, and pure in heart.
A people glorious all within,
Now, only now, and not before,
Born from above Thou canst not sin,
And God can never leave thee more. -
For Thee, O God, our constant praise
For Thee, O God, our constant praise
In Zion waits, Thy chosen seat;
Our promised altars we will raise,
And there our zealous vows complete.
O Thou, who to my humble prayer
Didst always bend Thy listening ear,
To Thee shall all mankind repair,
And at Thy gracious throne appear.
Our sins, though numberless, in vain,
To stop Thy flowing mercy try;
Whilst Thou o’erlook’st the guilty stain,
And washest out the crimson dye.
Blest is the man, who, near Thee placed,
Within Thy sacred dwelling lies!
While we, at humbler distance, taste
The vast delights Thy temple gives. -
For unto us a child is born,
For unto us a child is born,
To us a son is giv’n;
The government shall rest on Him,
Th’ anointed One from Heav’n.
His name is Wonderful Counselor,
The Mighty God is He,
The Everlasting Father,
The humble Prince of Peace.
The increase of His government
And peace shall never end;
He’ll reign on David’s ancient throne
As ruler of all men.
Upheld with justice and righteousness,
Forever His kingdom will last;
The zeal of the Lord God Most High
Will bring these things to pass.
Lord Jesus, come now and reign in me,
Be Lord of my life this hour.
Come be my counselor and my God,
My source of wisdom and power.
Watch o’er me with Your Father care,
My heart and my mind, fill with peace.
I worship You, my Lord and king,
My praise will never cease. -
Forward! be our watchword, steps and voices joined;
Forward! be our watchword, steps and voices joined;
Seek the things before us, not a look behind;
Burns the fiery pillar at our army’s head;
Who shall dream of shrinking, by our Captain led?
Forward through the desert, through the toil and fight;
Jordan flows before us; Zion beams with light.
Forward! When in childhood buds the infant mind;
All through youth and manhood not a thought behind;
Speed through realms of nature, climb the steps of grace;
Faint not, till in glory, gleams our Father’s face.
Forward, all the lifetime, climb from height to height,
Till the head be hoary, till the eve be light.
Forward! flock of Jesus, salt of all the earth,
Till each yearning purpose spring to glorious birth:
Sick, they ask for healing; blind, they grope for day;
Pour upon the nations wisdom’s loving ray.
Forward, out of error, leave behind the night;
Forward through the darkness, forward into light!
Glories upon glories hath our God prepared,
By the souls that love Him one day to be shared;
Eye hath not beheld them, ear hath never heard;
Nor of these hath uttered thought or speech a word;
Forward, marching eastward, where the heaven is bright,
Till the veil be lifted, till our faith be sight.
Far o’er yon horizon rise the city towers
Where our God abideth; that fair home is ours:
Flash the streets with jasper, shine the gates with gold;
Flows the gladdening river shedding joys untold.
Thither, onward, thither, in the Spirit’s might;
Pilgrims to your country, forward into light!
Into God’s high temple, onward as we press,
Beauty spreads around us, born of holiness;
Arch, and vault, and carving, lights of varied tone,
Softened words and holy, prayer and praise alone.
Every thought upraising to our city bright,
Where the tribes assemble round the throne of light.
Naught that city needeth of these aisles of stone;
Where the Godhead dwelleth, temple there is none;
All the saints that ever in these courts have stood,
Are but babes, and feeding on the children’s food.
On through sign and token, stars amidst the night,
Forward through the darkness, forward into light.
To th’eternal Father loudest anthems raise;
To the Son and Spirit echo songs of praise;
To the Lord of glory, blessed Three in One,
Be by men and angels endless honor done.
Weak are earthly praises, dull the songs of night:
Forward into triumph, forward into light! -
From all Thy saints in warfare, for all Thy saints at rest,
From all Thy saints in warfare, for all Thy saints at rest,
To Thee, O blessèd Jesus, all praises be addressed;
Thou, Lord, didst win the battle, that they might conquerors be;
Their crowns of living glory are lit with rays from Thee.
Praise, Lord, for Thine apostle, the first to welcome Thee,
The first to lead his brother the very Christ to see.
With hearts for Thee made ready, watch we throughout the year,
Forward to lead our brethren to own Thine Advent near.
All praise for Thine apostle, whose short lived doubtings prove
Thy perfect twofold nature, the fullness of Thy love.
On all who wait Thy coming shed forth Thy peace, O Lord,
And grant us faith to know Thee, true man, true God, adored.
Praise for the first of martyrs, who saw Thee ready stand
To aid in midst of torments, to plead at God’s right hand.
Share we with him, if summoned by death our Lord to own,
On earth the faithful witness, in heaven the martyr’s crown.
Praise for the loved disciple, exiled on Patmos’ shore;
Praise for the faithful record he to Thy Godhead bore,
Praise for the mystic vision through him to us revealed.
May we, in patience waiting, with Thine elect be sealed.
Praise for Thine infant martyrs, by Thee with tenderest love
Called early from the warfare to share the rest above.
O Rachel! cease thy weeping: they rest from pains and cares.
Lord, grant us hearts as guileless and crowns as bright as theirs.
Praise for the light from Heaven, praise for the voice of awe,
Praise for the glorious vision the persecutor saw.
Thee, Lord, for his conversion, we glorify today;
So lighten all our darkness with Thy true Spirit’s ray.
Lord, Thine abiding presence directs the wondrous choice
For one in place of Judas the faithful now rejoice.
Thy Church from false apostles forevermore defend,
And by Thy parting promise be with her to the end.
For him, O Lord, we praise Thee, the weak by grace made strong,
Whose labors and whose Gospel enrich our triumph song.
May we in all our weakness find strength from Thee supplied,
And all, as fruitful branches, in Thee, the vine, abide.
All praise for Thine apostle, blest guide to Greek and Jew,
And him surnamed Thy brother; keep us Thy brethren true,
And grant us grace to know Thee, the way, the truth, the life;
To wrestle with temptations still victors in the strife.
The son of consolation, moved by Thy law of love,
Forsaking earthly treasures, sought riches from above.
As earth now teems with increase, let gifts of grace descend,
That Thy true consolations may through the world extend.
We praise Thee for the Baptist, forerunner of the Word,
Our true Elias, making a highway for the Lord.
Of prophets last and greatest, we saw Thy dawning ray:
Make us the rather blessèd who love Thy glorious day.
Praise for thy great apostle, the eager and the bold;
Thrice falling, yet repentant, thrice charged to keep Thy fold.
Lord, make Thy pastors faithful to guard their flocks from ill,
And grant them dauntless courage, with humble, earnest will.
For him, O Lord, we praise Thee, who, slain by Herod’s sword
Drank of Thy cup of suffering, fulfilling thus Thy word.
Curb we all vain impatience to read Thy veiled decree,
And count it joy to suffer, if so brought nearer Thee.
All praise for Thine apostle, the faithful, pure, and true,
Whom underneath the fig tree Thine eye all seeing knew.
Like him may we be guileless, true Israelites indeed,
That Thy abiding presence our longing souls may feed.
Praise, Lord, for Him whose Gospel Thy human life declared,
Who, worldly gains forsaking, Thy path of suffering shared.
From all unrighteous Mammon O give us hearts set free,
That we, whate’er our calling, may rise and follow Thee.
For that beloved physician, all praise, whose Gospel shows
The healer of the nations, the sharer of our woes.
Thy wine and oil, O Savior, and bruised hearts deign to pour,
And with true balm of Gilead anoint us evermore.
Praise, Lord, for Thine apostles, who sealed their faith today:
One love, one zeal impelled them to tread the sacred way.
May we with zeal as earnest the faith of Christ maintain,
And, bound in love as brethren, at length Thy rest attain.
Apostles, prophets, martyrs, and all the sacred throng,
Who wear the spotless raiment, who raise the ceaseless song,
For these, passed on before us, Savior, we Thee adore,
And, walking in their footsteps, would serve Thee more and more.
Then praise we God the Father, and praise we God the Son,
And God the Holy Spirit, eternal Three in One;
Till all the ransomed number fall down before the throne,
And honor, power, and glory, ascribe to God alone. -
From foes that would the land devour,
From foes that would the land devour,
From guilty pride and lust of power,
From wild sedition’s lawless hour,
From yoke of slavery,
From blinded zeal by faction led,
From giddy change by fancy bred,
From poisonous error’s serpent head
Good Lord, preserve us free!
Defend, O God! with guardian hand,
The laws and ruler of our land,
And grant our Church Thy grace to stand
In faith and unity! -
Give me the faith which can remove
Give me the faith which can remove
And sink the mountain to a plain;
Give me the childlike praying love,
Which longs to build Thy house again;
Thy love, let it my heart overpower,
And all my simple soul devour.
I want an even strong desire,
I want a calmly fervent zeal,
To save poor souls out of the fire,
To snatch them from the verge of hell,
And turn them to a pardoning God,
And quench the brands in Jesus’ blood.
I would the precious time redeem,
And longer live for this alone,
To spend, and to be spent for them
Who have not yet my Savior known;
Fully on these my mission prove,
And only breathe, to breathe Thy love.
My talents, gifts, and graces, Lord,
Into Thy blessed hands receive;
And let me live to preach Thy Word,
And let me to Thy glory live;
My every sacred moment spend
In publishing the sinner’s friend.
Enlarge, inflame, and fill my heart
With boundless charity divine,
So shall I all strength exert,
And love them with a zeal like Thine,
And lead them to Thy open side,
The sheep for whom the Shepherd died.
Wesley’s original two stanzas:
O that I was as heretofore
When first sent forth in Jesus’ name.
I rushed thro’ every open door,
And cried to all, Behold the Lamb!
Seized the poor trembling slaves of sin,
And forced the outcasts to come in.
The God who kills, and makes alive,
To me the quickening power impart,
Thy grace restore, Thy work revive,
Retouch my lips, renew my heart,
Forth with a fresh commission send,
And all Thy servant’s steps attend. -
Give me the wings of faith to rise
Give me the wings of faith to rise
Within the veil, and see
The saints above, how great their joys,
How bright their glories be.
Once they were mourning here below,
And wet their couch with tears:
They wrestled hard, as we do now,
With sins, and doubts, and fears.
I ask them whence their victory came:
They, with united breath,
Ascribe their conquest to the Lamb,
Their triumph to His death.
They marked the footsteps that He trod,
His zeal inspired their breast;
And following their incarnate God,
Possess the promised rest.
Our glorious Leader claims our praise
For His own pattern giv’n;
While the long cloud of witnesses
Show the same path to Heav’n.
Another arrangement, by Walter Kittredge (1834-1905) (♫ pdf nwc), adds this refrain:
Many are the friends who are waiting today,
Happy on the golden strand,
Many are the voices calling us away,
To join their glorious band.
Calling us away, calling us away,
Calling to the better land,
Calling us away, calling us away,
Calling to the better land. -
God Give Us Men
God give us men endued with power,
To meet the challenge of the hour,
With apostolic zeal inspired,
With apostolic fervor fired.
God give us men of single eye,
To live for Christ - for Christ to die,
Who press to meet the battle’s strife,
And love the gospel more than life.
God give us men as true as steel,
To stand for truth they know and feel,
Who scorn to compromise or bend,
For frown or smile of foe or friend.
God give us men who fast and pray,
In supplication night and day,
Who toil, and labor,and travail,
Who watch and wrestle and prevail.
God give us men with weeping eyes,
Who preach and pray with tears and sighs,
Who plead, and yearn, and plead again,
And move the hearts of God and man.
God give us men of courage strong,
To face the persecuting throng,
The raging storm, the lonely jail,
And never flinch, and never quail.
God give us men to preach, to pray,
To fill the gap, to lead the way,
To light revival fires again,
To work, to weep, God give us men. -
Hark, the glad sound! the Savior comes!
Hark, the glad sound! the Savior comes!
The Savior promised long!
Let every heart prepare a throne,
And every voice a song.
On Him the Spirit, largely poured,
Exerts its sacred fire;
Wisdom and might, and zeal and love,
His holy breast inspire.
He comes the prisoners to release,
In Satan’s bondage held;
The gates of brass before Him burst,
The iron fetters yield.
He comes from thickest films of vice
To clear the mental ray,
And on the eye-balls of the blind
To pour celestial day.
He comes the broken heart to bind,
The bleeding soul to cure;
And with the treasures of His grace
To enrich the humble poor.
His silver trumpets publish loud
The jubilee of the Lord
Our debts are all remitted now,
Our heritage restored.
Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace,
Thy welcome shall proclaim;
And Heaven’s eternal arches ring
With Thy belovèd name. -
HAVE YOU ANY ROOM FOR JESUS?
Have you any room for Jesus,
He who bore your load of sin?
As He knocks and asks admission,
Sinners, will you let Him in?
Refrain
Room for Jesus, King of Glory!
Hasten now His Word obey;
Swing the heart's door widely open,
Bid Him enter while you may.
Room for pleasure, room for business,
But for Christ the Crucified,
Not a place that He can enter,
In the heart for which He died?
Have you any room for Jesus,
As in grace He calls again?
O today is time accepted,
Tomorrow you may call in vain.
Room and time now give to Jesus,
Soon will pass God's day of grace;
Soon thy heart left cold and silent,
And thy Savior's pleading cease.
